Personal Timeline - Part 1 of 2

Heyo!

About a year ago, I built a neat little web app that displays a timeline of events. It can be found here: James Rossy Personal Timeline.

I built it just for kicks, and haven’t bothered publicizing it in any way. However I’ve decided to revisit it. My intention is to find a clever way to tie the app to Tumblr (though I may be migrating to Wordpress, more on that later).  I’ll then replace my blog’s landing page with a sexy timeline of posts and/or life events. Hence the “Part 1 of 2” in the title.

Diddly Dee Dublin Do

It’s that time again, I’m packing my things back into my backpack. I suppose that’s why they call it that. My four months in Dublin have flown by, and it would take another four to share all moments and memories. Hopefully a summary will suffice :)

What is Datahug?

I’ve recently completed an internship with Datahug, an enterprise software start-up based out of Dublin, Ireland. I’m frequently asked by colleagues, friends, and family what exactly Datahug does, so I thought may be helpful to author a short post explaining the product as I understand it.

Datahug provides a SAAS solution to help an organization identify who within it best connects it to people it wants to reach.

Pre-Dublin Adventures: Paris -> Brussels -> Amsterdam -> London

I’ve wanted to visit Dublin for years, and I have a hard time believing I’m really here. For as long as I can remember, I’ve had a fixation with traditional Irish music. I love all of it, from The Pogues to Flogging Molly covers of the old favourites, Dirty Old Town, Irish Rover, Dicey Riley, etc. I’ll be in Dublin for 4 months working with a startup called Datahug. More on that in a future post.

Given that I don’t find myself across the pond very often, I took the opportunity to do some travelling around western Europe before arriving in Dublin. I visited 5 cities: Paris, Brussels, Amsterdam, and London.

When those who do not know how to get their bread any other way find no one who has occasion for their service, and do not themselves have sufficient virtue to suffer honorably in poverty and obscurity, they are forced to resort to ways of supporting themselves that generally bring them to the gallows.
Machiavelli, The Art of War, Book 1 - referring to the misfortune of men who make warfare their sole occupation.

A general must mindful not to align his soldiers facing the sun and wind. A prince must take care not to allow his citizens to adopt soldiering as their sole profession. An infantry consisting largely of mercenaries is likely to suffer corruption.

Magento : The good, the bad, the ugly

Magento is an e-Commerce platform intended to facilitate the construction and maintenance of an online store. Its underlying philosophy is that most e-Commerce functionality is more or less standardized, so its pieces should be reusable. The enterprise edition includes tools to help with payment processing, customer management, internationalization, SEO, etc. It also includes a beefy admin tool to manage inventory, track sales, and lots more.

I think Magento is a great idea. In practice though, I’ve got a growing number of complaints.

Heyo!

As part of my anthropology class this term, we’ve been studying the business of smuggling. The required course readings include a book about the nature and impact illegal trade, studied on a national and global scale. Though I typically wouldn’t review a book required for a class, I thoroughly enjoyed this one, and I thought it deserved some blog attention.

High Expectations for Great Expectations

Great Expectations

Heyo!

I’m sad to say that in my childhood I have never read nor been read Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations. It’s tragic I know, but it’s just one of many classics that slipped through the curriculum cracks. So when I discovered that it had been pre-loaded on my shiny new tablet, I took it as a sign.
